The Artinian Travel Awards and Prestage-Cook Travel Awards are granted on a first-come, first-serve basis. All other awards are determined by committees assigned to evaluate nominations.
The Artinian Award is a travel grant available for program participants who are full-time but untenured faculty members. Edward Artinian graduated from Brown University in 1957, and received an MBA from Columbia University in 1977. In 1979, he founded Chatham House Publishers, which specializes in publishing political science and public policy works. He died September 9, 1997.

The Prestage-Cook Award is named for Dr. Jewel Limar Prestage. Dr. Prestage was one of the first African American women to receive a Ph. D. from an American University. She was a pioneer in academic research in the area of race, gender, and politics and played leadership roles in many national political science organizations (including serving as president of the SPSA in 1976), however, her most lasting legacy is her mentoring and teaching of thousands of students, many of whom she helped guide towards postgraduate education. To continue that work of supporting graduate students in political science, the SPSA offers the Prestage-Cook Travel Award, a travel grant exclusively for graduate students who are program participants.

Walter Beach was a man known for his dedication, generosity, and enthusiasm. He played a vital role in the formation of the SPSA, as well as significant roles in the American Political Science Association, Policy Studies Organization, and National Capital Area Political Science Association. Beach earned his undergraduate degree in Political Science from Dickinson College, and later a master’s degree in political science from George Washington University. He was editor of PS (the APSA’s news journal) from 1971-1980. He also worked for the Brookings Institution and the Helen Dwight Reid Educational Foundation.
The Walter Beach Award carries forward Beach’s vision of internationalizing the SPSA by providing opportunities for foreign colleagues to attend the annual conference.
To qualify for this award, you must be a current colleague at an institution outside of the United States and its territories.

Arnold Vedlitz Award – The Arnold Vedlitz Award is intended to recognize environmental research in the American South, with particular consideration for the Gulf Coast area’s environmental challenges. It will be presented biennially to the author of a seminal book or article on the topic. The award comes with a $250 stipend and was made possible by an intial endowment contribution by Arnold Vedlitz.
Diane Blair Award – The Diane Blair Award for Outstanding Achievement in Politics and Government is awarded biennially to a political scientist who has played an outstanding role in politics and/or government during his or her career. This would include, for example, someone who has served as an elected or appointed official in state or national government. It would also include someone who has been active in political campaigns, worked effectively for reforms in the political system, or has performed other kinds of volunteer work in the world of politics.
James C. Garand Outstanding Mentor Award – The James C. Garand Outstanding Mentor Award honors James C. Garand and is intended to recognize outstanding mentors in political science. The award is open to anyone who mentors undergraduate students, graduate students, or junior faculty. Anyone who wishes to nominate a candidate for the award should submit a one page letter detailing the mentoring contributions along with the signature or names of at least two other individuals who support the nomination to spsa.finance@spsa.net.
The award comes with a $500.00 stipend and was made possible by an initial endowment contribution from Kenneth J. Meier.
Joseph L. Bernd JOP Best Paper Award – The Joseph L. Bernd Journal of Politics Best Paper Award is awarded each year at the Annual Meeting to the Best Paper in the Journal of Politics during the previous year.
Malcolm Jewell Award – The Malcolm Jewell Award is given to the author(s) of the Best Graduate Student Paper presented at the Annual Meeting.
Manning Dauer Award – The Manning Dauer Award is presented biennially to a political scientist for exceptional service to the profession.
Marian Irish Award – The Marian Irish Award is given to the author(s) of the Best Paper on Women and Politics presented at the Annual Meeting.
Neal Tate Award – The Neal Tate Award is given to the author(s) of the Best Paper on Judicial Politics presented at the Annual Meeting.
Pi Sigma Alpha Award – The Pi Sigma Alpha Award is given to the author(s) of the Best Overall Paper presented at the annual meeting.
V.O. Key Award – The V.O. Key Award is given to the author(s) of the best book on Southern Politics.
Erika Fairchild Award – The Erika Fairchild Award was designed to honor the memory of the late Erika Fairchild who once served as president of SPSA Women (formerly the Women’s Caucus for Political Science, South). The award criteria consists of those attributes that Erika exemplified:
The Fairchild Award is given biennially by the SPSA Women. Committee includes the current caucus President, the past president, and the most recent award winner.
