Previous Award Winners

Arnold Vedlitz Award – The Arnold Vedlitz Award is intended to recognize environmental research in the American South, with particular consideration for the Gulf Coast area’s environmental challenges. It will be presented biennially to the author of a seminal book or article on the topic.

Diane Blair Award – The Diane Blair Award for Outstanding Achievement in Politics and Government is awarded biennially to a political scientist who has played an outstanding role in politics and/or government during his or her career.  This would include, for example, someone who has served as  an elected or appointed official in state or national government. It would also include someone who has been active in political campaigns, worked effectively for reforms in the political system, or has performed other kinds of volunteer work in the world of politics.

Joseph L Bernd JOP Best Paper Award – The Joseph L. Bernd Journal of Politics Best Paper Award is awarded each year at the Annual Meeting to the Best Paper in the Journal of Politics during the previous year.

Malcolm Jewell Award – The Malcolm Jewell Award is given to the author(s) of the Best Graduate Student Paper presented at the Annual Meeting.

Manning Dauer Award – The Manning Dauer Award is presented biennially to a political scientist for exceptional service to the profession.

Marian Irish Award – The Marian Irish Award is given to the author(s) of the Best Paper on Women and Politics presented at the Annual Meeting.

Neal Tate Award – The Neal Tate Award is given to the author(s) of the Best Paper on Judicial Politics presented at the Annual Meeting.

Pi Sigma Alpha Award – The Pi Sigma Alpha Award is given to the author(s) of the Best Overall Paper presented at the annual meeting.

V.O. Key Award – The V.O. Key Award is given to the author(s) of the best book on Southern Politics.
