The Southern Political Science Association Invites Nominations and Applications for Editor of the

Journal of Politics

Jeff Gill, President of the Southern Political Science Association, has appointed a Search Committee to select a new Editor for the Journal of Politics. The incoming Editor will succeed Jeff Jenkins, whose editorial term will end on December 31, 2020. The new Editor will serve an initial four-year term, from January 1, 2021 through December 31, 2024.

The members of the Search Committee are: Kirk Randazzo, University of South Carolina (chair); Lonna Atkeson, University of New Mexico; Jan Leighley, American University; David Lewis, Vanderbilt University; Bill Mishler, University of Arizona; and Lee Walker, University of North Texas. Jeff Gill and Robert Howard are ex officio members.

The Search Committee seeks nominations and applications for the Editorship. Both individual and group candidacies are equally eligible for consideration. In either case, the Editor(s) will be expected to:

  • Sustain and enhance the stature of the Journal of Politics as a preeminent, general audience journal within political science and the broader social science community.
  • Guarantee that the Journal be open to submissions from all subfields within the discipline and to work that may span traditional disciplinary boundaries.
  • Be discerning, fair, and equitable in all aspects of the review process.
  • Handle publication decisions in a reasonable, open (as appropriate), and timely manner.
  • Maintain journal operations and the editorial office.
  • Think innovatively about the future of the journal including the use of technology in the dissemination and utilization of scholarly work.

Nominations and applications for the Editorship of the Journal of Politics should be sent to Kirk A. Randazzo (randazzo@mailbox.sc.edu or Kirk.Randazzo@gmail.com) or mailed to Department of Political Science, 324 Gambrell Hall, University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC 29208. Professor Randazzo will provide interested parties with detailed information regarding the material that should be included in the proposal for the Editorship. Draft proposals are due August 1, 2019. Individuals or groups making proposals should plan to either: a) attend the 2019 Annual Meeting of the American Political Science Association where the search committee will meet with those submitting draft proposals; or b) schedule a conference call early in the fall semester with search committee members. Final proposals must be submitted to the Search Committee by November 1, 2019. Final interviews will be conducted at the SPSA annual meeting in January 2020. Based upon material in the written proposals and the oral interviews, the Search Committee will recommend a list of candidates to the Executive Council of the Southern Political Science Association, who will make the final selection decision.
