Call for Editors for the Journal of Politics

The Southern Political Science Association invites nominations and applications for Editor(s) of the Journal of Politics. Susan Haire, President of the Southern Political Science Association, has appointed a Search Committee to select Editor(s) for the Journal of Politics. The editorship is a four-year term beginning January 1, 2025 and renewable for two to four additional years upon mutual agreement between the SPSA Executive Council and the editor.

The Search Committee seeks nominations and applications for the Editorship. Both individual andgroupcandidaciesareequallyeligiblefor consideration.

 

The Editor(s) will be expected to:

  • Sustain and enhance the stature of the Journal of Politics as a preeminent, general audience journal within political science and the broader social science
  • Guarantee that the Journal be open to submissions from all subfields within the discipline and to work that may span traditional disciplinary boundaries.
  • Be transparent, discerning, fair, and equitable in all aspects of the review
  • Handle publication decisions in a reasonable, open (as appropriate), and timely
  • Maintain smooth functioning of journal operations and the editorial
  • Think innovatively about the future of the journal including the use of technology in the dissemination and utilization of scholarly work.
  • Appoint an editorial team that will maintain the highest ethical standards. Editorial team members will sign statements to this effect and attesting to no conflict of interest with the SPSA or the Journal.

The members of the Search Committee include: Mary R. Anderson, University of Tampa (chair); Mitchell Brown, Auburn University; Laura Olson, Clemson University; Kirk Randazzo, University of South Carolina; and Lee Walker, National Science Foundation. Susan Haire, SPSA President and Robert Howard, SPSA Executive Director are ex officio members.

 

Nominations or a Letter of Intent (LOI) for the Editorship of the Journal of Politics should be sent to Mary Anderson at mranderson@ut.edu. The Editorial Search Committee will provide interested parties with proposal guidelines regarding the materials that should be included in the proposal for the Editorship. Letters of Intent are due by August 15, 2023. Individuals or groups submitting an LOI will be scheduled for preliminary Zoom conference calls with the search committee during the week of September 4-8, 2023. Candidates invited to submit final proposals to the Search Committee must do so by October 15, 2023. Virtual interviews will be conducted by the search committee in late October and November. Finalists will be scheduled for in-person interviews at the SPSA annual meeting in January 2024 in New Orleans. The Search Committee will recommend a list of candidates to the Executive Council of the Southern Political Science Association, who will make the final selection.
